Known as the "protector of the monks" Saint John the Forerunner, the Baptist of Jesus, is honored more than all the other Saints of the Orthodox Church. A great many churches carry his name and many Monasteries are dedicated to him. His ascetic life, his appearance both dominant and remarkable, his dynamic and strong words that awakened most of his listeners made John the Forerunner very dear to the Church commemorating him on many dates such as September 23, June 24, August 29 etc. however the most popular commemorating date is January 7.
The iconography of John the Forerunner is found in hundreds of churches and monasteries all over Greece and since the 10th century, in all icons he is presented with an ascetic shape, long hair and beard and a wrinkled face. The face of Saint John was iconographed for the first time in a fresco in the main nave of the Katholico in the Monastery of Pantokratoras, around 1363 A.D.
